Coop Home Goods Bamboo Derived Pillow

When it comes to bamboo pillows, Coop Home Goods has a hit a home run in our opinion. You'll see below why we think Coop has a winner on it's hand. A top seller on most selling platforms online, Coop's bamboo pillow is performed better than any other pillow in all our critierias.

What's Unique?

Being a memory foam pillow, these pillow really defines the essence of a memory pillow as it really does conform to the shape of your head unlike other pillows which say they do.  The truth is in the pudding - these pillows meet the CertiPUR-US standards for content, emissions and durability, and are analyzed by independent, accredited testing labs. What is the CertiPUR-US standards? The CertiPUR-US standards insures that each pillow is made without ozone depleters (products which contain halogen and can harm the ozone), made with flame retardants, and a low VOC (volatile organic compounds) which help in reducing indoor air quality (see: Do Bamboo Pillows Smell). In addition, being a memory foam pillow - it is perfect for side sleepers. (See: Side Sleepers)

Head Support:

Head support is one of the biggest things we look for when rating a pillow. It has to have enough build to properly lift the head while soft enough to conform to the head. This pillow has just the right amount of support that lifts the head up at a perfect angle enough that you could even use this for patient's with GERD.

Coop Home Goods Pillow Experiment

Let’s  take a look at an experiment that was set up using this pillow that demonstrates how well this pillow conforms yet demonstrates just enough amount of stiffness to not allow your head to just sink into the pillow. As you can see above, the perfect balance. FYI – the books totaled to 9.7 lbs while an avg head weight is 10 lbs.

Quality:

The aspect that I love most about this pillow is the fact they actually do stay cool. As you know from my bamboo sheet guide – coolness was a major factor that I used to compare sheets. I didn’t do that for pillows this time because most pillows will be placed in pillow covers allowing you not to really experience any cooling feature if a pillow truly has one. But this one suprisingly actuallyl does keep the entire pillow cool. I can give credit to perhaps the memory foam which is shredded allows better airflow, compared to other memory foam pillows. This helps with that pesky smell that most bamboo pillows emit.

Durability:

Many users have claimed that their pillow has lasted for over 1 year! Which is amazing to hear because most pillows often need to be replaced every 6-8 months. Mine has personally been with me for over 3 months and has weathered the storm of my kids pillow fights and jumping on them.

Return Policy:

5- Year Policy that it wont go flat.

Snuggle Pedic's Ultra Luxury Bamboo Pillow

Coming in at a close 2nd, Snuggle Pedic's pillow has some of the same components as the Coop Home Bamboo pillow in that they both are CertriPUR-US certified.

What's Unique?

Snuggle Pedic advertises it self to have a Kool-Flow Soft and Luxurious, Extra Breathable Micro-Vented Cover Made In The U.S.A. with 43% Viscose of Bamboo, 56.4 percent Polyester, .6 Percent Lycra. This micro-vented cover is supposed to keep the pillow feeling nice and cool while at the same time allowing it to "breath".

Head Support:

The Snuggle Pedic has more firmer and less forgiving feel compared to the other pillows as one can see from the pictures below. One important fact to remember is that the Coop Home, Snuggle Pedic and Xtreme Comfort pillows can be adjusted in regards to loft due to the distribution of the memory foam, however with the Coop one can access the fill and can add or remove foam on their own BUT with the Xtreme Comfort and Snuggle-Pedic it is sealed thus not allowing one access to do so themselves. They do allow you to contact them and they do a customization at no charge to you. I would suggest letting them know before you order what time of firmness you are looking for.

Coop Home Goods Pillow Experiment

Both pillows are filled CertiPUR-US Certified foam. The main difference that I see it the Coop uses a finer shred whereas the Xtreme Comfort/Snuggle-Pedic use a chunkier shred.

Quality:

After purchasing the pillow, I immediately put it in the dryer as I normally do and it fluffed up in about 2 minutes on low, and took maybe 3 hours in the dryer to fully clear the smell out. I realized it does indeed tend to hold it’s shape. It’s quite soft but the stuffing doesn’t rearrange itself when I mash my face into it. I would prefer if it did, but I think this offers a more traditional pillow feeling. I will comment that it took some time to flatten it to a reasonable loft after the initial fluffing.

Durability:

I have seen no issues with this pillow thus far on durability.  My primary complaint about other pillows is that they end up crushing down during the night and not supporting my head and neck, the Snuggle-Pedic does not have that problem. One user who wears a c-pap mask when he sleeps primarily on his side, said that most pillows dislodge his c-pap mask when he sinks his head into one however this one did not.

Return Policy:

This one comes with a 90 day satisfaction money back promise, free customization promise and the 20 year warranty if it ever needs replacing. I called them to see if this was true or just a gimick but they confirmed that they indeed back up these promises and there are no special clauses to them.

Xtreme Comfort Shredded Bamboo Pillow

Xtreme Comfort boasts their bamboo pillow as one that is hypoallergic, dust mite resistant, and breatheable like many of the pillows on this list. They also state that they are Certi-PUR certified as well along with made without chlorofluorocarbons.

What's Unique?

The main unique feature of this pillow has to be the “extra breathable micro vented kool-flow technology” cover which they advertise as a unique and propiertary technology which allows your pillow to stay cool for extended periods of time. I did happen to find that this pillow did indeed keep the covers cool but not more than the usual.

Head Support:

The pillow does provide decent head support in that it does not appear to be lump or bumpy in texture.

Quality:

This pillow arrives rolled via vacuum packaging so it takes a little bit of time for it to completely unravel. Take the time to pull all of the inner foam in all directions, then let the shredded memory foam expand for a couple hours. If you take the time to unbundle the foam foam inside, you’ll get the most out of your pillow.

This is not a memory foam pillow, in that it is not one solid piece of gel foam. With the solid gel foam pillow, you get complete density without the feel of a down type pillow. With this shredded foam, you get a lot of density with the ability to rearrange the inner fluff just like a down pillow. The biggest difference between down and shredded foam is that, even with the densest of down pillows, you’ll still deflate the stuffing while you sleep.

Durability:

Generally, there have been no major complaints with this pillow. At the time I reviewed this pillow, mine did get lumpier than when I originally purchased it stopped filling up as much after the foam depressed. However, after spanking the pillow a couple of times  it did regain its fluffiness and seemed smoother in texture when lying down on it.

Return Policy:

Along with the amazon return policy – they have a no questions asked money back guarantee. If you aren’t 100% satisfied, simply return it within 30 days. They also state to provide a 6 year warranty via Amazon – I would inquire more about this as I am not sure if they are saying their return policy is 30 days or 6 years. I will find out and add to this review when I get a response back.

Essence Of Bamboo- Platinum Edition

Essence of Bamboo is a company that is particularly known to sell a wide range of bamboo products, their most successful being their pillow. The pillow is sold via Deluxe Home Goods on Amazon. Be careful not to buy from other listings selling the same pillow at a discounted rate.

What's Unique?

Essence of Bamboo states that they use top quality materials and sew these pillows right here in the USA. The premium pillow covering and USA made fill promotes natural heat dispersion and allows exceptional air circulation.  However, it's important to note that the pillow is made in China still, so not a complete Made In USA product.

Head Support:

The Essence of Bamboo pillow essentially provides a stiff support and not a conforming one like the memory foam type. What it comes down to for us is that the Essence pillow's stuffing isn't equally distributed throughout the pillow, thus making it feel bumpy and lumpy. I also question the choice of building the pillow out of polyester and covering it with polyester which in my experience creates a pillow that will trap heat, not release it.

Coop Home Goods Pillow Experiment

Both pillows are filled CertiPUR-US Certified foam. The main difference that I see it the Coop uses a finer shred whereas the Xtreme Comfort/Snuggle-Pedic use a chunkier shred.

Quality:

Something I realized after purchasing this pillow is that they are made out of 85% polyester and 15% rayon. I am unsure if they advertise their pillow as 100% rayon but I assumed there would be more rayon for a bamboo pillow.

Durability:

In-terms of durability, many have complained that it lost it’s shape in under a week. Some were saying this is because of the packaging in which it was sent with.

Return Policy:

Along with the Amazon return policy – they state “If it’s just not for you for any reason, simply return it for your money back.”

Things To Remember When Purchasing A Bamboo Pillow

1. Size and feel are more important than quality or cost.

In the big scheme of things, there is no purpose in our opinion of a pillow over 100$ in fact you can get a pillow in this list for much less. Our number 1 pillow is much less than that.  While it may be that more expensive pillows tend to last slightly longer - the trade off is not worth the extra money. Here's why -  it makes more sense to buy an affordable pillow and simply replace it more frequently. The fact of the matter is - since you will end up replacing pillows often because no pillow lasts forever and even the best pillows need to be replaced at least once every 6-8 months - hence why replace a 100$+ pillow when you can get more bang for the buck with something cheaper. This is why I highly stress that you look at the size, thickness, firmness and feel of the pillow as  opposed to anything else when purchasing a pillow. This pillow is going to be something you will be using every day - so invest wisely!

2. Memory foam pillows lose density regardless. Period.

You can buy yourself some extra time by flipping the pillow every night, but it's only delaying the inevitable. No - not even higher quality pillows will outlast father time. There's a reason your here searching for the best pillow - pillows don't last a lifetime especially memory foam pillows. But that doesn't mean memory foam pillows are worse - infact I perfer them to non-memory foam ones. Many companies will drone on and on about 10-year warranties and how their pillow lasts for years and it's total BS in my opinion. So remember - pillows are meant to be replaced - pick one that will give you the best feeling for that period of time and don't worry too much about how long it will last.

3. Be Careful Washing Bamboo Pillows

Don't wash it immediately. If you're getting a memory foam pillow shipped, then it'll emit a kind of chemical smell after you remove it from the box. Just let it air out for 48 hours and it'll go away. Don't listen to the manufacturers about washing the pillow immediately. It's a huge hassle and a massive waste of time and energy. Please see our washing guide if you do wish to eventually wash it, which we recommend but just not right away. The more wash cycles your pillow goes through , the more it loses it's conformity.

4. Double wrap. Always.

This rule is something many don't tell you but it's extremely important. Always try to encase your pillow in two layers. The first layer should be one of those close-fitting pillow protectors that protect against allergens and hair and body oils. It also helps to protect you from any irritant residing in the pillow from the shipping process. The second layer will be your regular pillow cover. Many people just do one layer of casing and complain of oil marks or stains- just remember if you double wrap you'll be protecting your pillows and truly putting the benefits of a bamboo pillow to good use.

5. There Is No Perfect Pillow.

Yup, I said it.  Everyone's needs are different, and yet there are no tailored made pillows customized for an individual. So even though I often find pillows that I like, it won't be necessarily perfect for you. For example, some of you may be a side sleeper, and so your needs would be different than a non-side sleeper. Over the years, I've found that a side sleeper needs a medium-firm to firm pillow that is also thick enough to maintain a 90 degree angle where the head meets the shoulders. That's the same angle that naturally occurs while you're awake and going about your business throughout the day. If the head sinks too low when you sleep, then it puts strain and pressure on your neck. Someone with wide shoulders will need a thicker pillow -- unless of course they have a proportionally large head and thick neck, in which case the pillow might not need to be any thicker than someone with narrower shoulders. Additionally, one must factor in the firmness of their mattress. If your mattress is on the soft side, then a side sleeper's shoulders will sink farther into the mattress, leaving less space between the shoulder and head and thus requiring less thickness in the pillow. Conversely, a firmer mattress necessitates a thicker pillow in order to compensate for the increase in space between the shoulders and head.
